Global Education Network of Young Europeans
Prihlasovanie na GLEN projekty pre rok 2008 práve prebieha!!!
GLEN - Global Education Network of Young Europeans
GLEN je neziskovou a politicky nezávislou iniciatívou dvanástich organizácii zo starých a nových členských krajín Európskej únie: Česká republika (INEX-SDA), Estónsko (AKU), Francúzsko (BECI), Litva (Kolping), Lotyšsko (GLEN Latvia), Nemecko (ASA Program), Maďarsko (HVSF), Malta (Third World Group), Poľsko (PHO), Rakúsko (HORIZONT3000), Slovenská republika (Tabita) a Slovinsko (Slovene Philathropy).
Poslaním programu GLEN je zvýšiť povedomie o rozvojových otázkach a politike rozvojovej spolupráce. GLEN dáva ľuďom príležitosti učiť sa a porozumieť globálnemu rozvoju a takto zvýšiť povedomie o potrebe udržateľného a sociálne spravodlivého rozvoja na celom svete.
GLEN prispieva k lepšiemu pochopeniu globálnych vzájomných závislostí, ku spravodlivému a udržateľnému spôsobu žitia, k zodpovednej rozvojovej politike a ku vzťahom medzi Severom a Juhom, ktoré sú založené na rovnom partnerstve a spoločnom rešpekte.
Ciele programu GLEN sú nasledujúce:
- budovať kapacity mladých Európanov na prácu v oblasti rozvojovej spolupráce a globálneho vzdelávania,
- prispieť k zvyšovaniu povedomia v európskej spoločnosti o otázkach globálneho rozvoja a vzájomnými závislosťami medzi životom ľudí v Európe a v rozvojovej krajine či v krajine s prechodnou ekonomikou,
- spájať ľudí a organizácie pracujúce v oblasti rozvojového vzdelávania v rôznych krajinách Európy, poskytnúť im priestor na kreatívnu výmenu a spoločný rozvoj nových myšlienok,
- prispieť k európskej integrácii, predovšetkým medzi starými a novými členskými krajinami Európskej únie.

Priebeh programu GLEN
Prípravná fáza GLEN intenzívne pripravuje účastníkov na ich pobyt počas dvoch prípravných seminárov, ktoré vedú skúsení tútori – buď bývalí účastníci programu alebo ľudia so skúsenosťami z konkrétneho regiónu. Semináre predstavia účastníkom koncept rozvojového vzdelávania. Diskutujú o témach, ktoré súvisia s globálnym rozvojom, a získajú praktické rady o špecifickej hostiteľskej krajine. Oba prípravné semináre poskytnú účastníkom relevantné informácie o rozvojovej spolupráci, ich hostiteľskej krajine a o tradíciách a hodnotách krajiny, z ktorej pochádza ich partner v medzinárodnom tíme. Účastníci si zlepšia svoje sociálne a interkultúrne zručnosti a dôležitú úlohu taktiež zohráva kritický pohľad na rozvojovú spoluprácu.
GLEN hradí účastníkom cestovné náklady na/zo seminárov, stravu a ubytovanie počas oboch seminárov.
Študijno-pracovné pobyty vo svete Jadro programu GLEN tvoria študijno-pracovné pobyty v rozvojových krajinách a krajinách s prechodnou ekonomikou v Afrike, Ázii a juho-východnej Európe, kde študenti alebo mladí profesionáli pracujú spoločne s miestnou partnerskou organizáciou.
GLEN hradí účastníkom minimálne letenku, trojmesačné štipendium a komplexné cestovné poistenie.
Získali dôležité kompetencie na zvyšovanie povedomia o otázkach globálneho rozvoja vo svojej krajine a prostredníctvom svojej vlastnej skúsenosti vedia zblížiť ľudí z rôznych regiónov sveta.
- a mnohé ďalšie.

India: Spices go Fair Trade
Vocational field: Economics, Fair Frade
Field of study: Economics, Business law or related
Language: English
Number of Participants: 3
In the hilly areas of Kerala small-scale farmers make a living from spices like Cardamom, Pepper, Vanilla and Cinnamom and on crops like Coconut, Rubber, Tea and Coffee. Since centuries cash crops have been exported from the harbours of cities like Cochin. Traditionally there are several traders between the farmer and the sales market overseas. The farmers stand at the end of the trade chain, middlemen and wholesalers are organising the market via trade monopolies. Small-scale farmers do not have a direct access to the market and therefore depend on the wholesalers. They live close to the poverty line which makes them extremely vulnerable to price fluctuations.
The “Indian Farmer’s Union” (INFARM) organises small-scale farmers in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Its work focusses on defending the farmers' rights and interests. Organic farming, natural food and medicine systems are supported in order to tackle the water crisis.
INFARM is interested in establishing Fair Trade relations between the organized farmers and traders of the overseas market in order to improve the farmers’ living conditions by increasing their income and planning reliability.
The GLEN participants are expected to support Fair Trade opportunities for small-scale farmers selling Cardamom and Pepper. During the project participants get to know the situation and needs of local farmers and raise their awareness of Fair Trade opportunities. They research the legal framework for trading in India and Germany and between the countries, in order to establish contacts with fair traders. Research on frameworks for trade relationships and on European standards for organic food products and quality control complements this approach. The GLEN participants will work in the INFARM office at Kottayam district in Kerala.
The scheduled project time is three months between July and October.
Kenya: Youth Organisations Networking Scheme
Field of Study: Social Studies, Media, Communication, Journalism, PR
Language: English, Swahili is no precondition but strongly recommended
Number of Participants: 2
The Nairobi slums are often associated only with poverty, diseases and crime, they are thought of as a place where all the hope is lost. Despite the difficult living conditions many organizations develop in slums through the initiative of young people who want to improve their own lives and the lives of their community.
The “Nairobi South Youth Group” (NSYG) is a youth group managed and run by and for the youth. It was established in 2002 and its youth are 43 active implementers of the programs who act as youth role models in the communities.
The group responds to the development challenges of its community through social entrepreneurship and youth led business start ups. Another aim is to advocate on behavior change towards the spread of HIV/AIDS and other related diseases, drug abuse and crime.
NSYG is in the process of creating a network of the existing youth organizations where information exchange flow is free, there is transparency and areas of joint or specific interests clearly stated and well known. An overview of existing youth organizations is necessary in order to reach this aim and in order to establish possibilities for more efficiency and cooperation.
GLEN participants should develop a detailed concept of systematic grouping of all the youth initiatives and their resources. NSYG can provide all relevant information about Nairobi youth groups. The GLEN participants will visit the NSYG partner youth groups to learn about their area of activities and to establish relationships with the group, because for this clustering approach, trust is a crucial factor. Communication skills and openness of the GLEN participants are as important as technical competences.
The project is scheduled to run three months between July and October 2008.
Mozambique: Support Girls in Need!
Vocational field: Social Worker, Education, Child Care
Field of study: Social Sciences, Intercultural Studies, Pedagogy
Language: English, Portuguese
Number of Participants: 2
The "Conselho Cristao de Mocabique" (CCM) is the national Christian council of the country. They focus on social activities, rural development, education, health, emergency response and post disaster rehabilitation programmes as well as advocacy, lobbying, HIV/AIDS and peace building. One of many projects run by CCM is an orphanage called CARAN for 36 girls aged between 6 and 16. All girls come from a difficult social environment; CARAN offers them care and education envisaging the re-integration of the girls into their families. Girls at CARAN attend classes on cooking, handicraft, music, sex education, health and social welfare. The orphanage is situated in Liberdade, a village not far from Maputo.
The GLEN participants, together with the local staff, will be involved in the development of teaching plans and in giving lectures for the girls on various topics. The topics may include languages, geography, maths, sports, music, arts, theatre, seminars on children's rights and development as well as many others. As classes in public schools often consist of more than 80 children, the GLEN participants help to improve the quality of education by providing additional teaching forces. GLEN participants can also design own educational materials to be used by CARAN. It is important that the participants are spontaneous and sensitive to the problems of the girls in order to assist them in developing their social skills. Apart from intercultural competence, GLEN participants are required to have good knowledge of English and Portuguese.
The project is scheduled to run three months between August and October 2008.
The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German/Swiss and one Slovak participant.
Republic of South Africa: Community Empowerment Through Environmental Development
Vocational field: Multimedia, Librarian
Field of Study: Economics, Management, Journalism, Agriculture, Communication, PR
Language: English
Number of Participants: 3
“Abalimi Bezekhaya” (AB), is Xhosa for “Planters of the Home”, works to empower the disadvantaged residents of Cape Town through urban agriculture and environmental programs. It enables people to overcome poverty by helping them grow organic food in community gardens as well as by greening the city areas with local plants. The organisation carries out micro and meso scale agriculture and landscape “action-engineering” of projects, conducts workshops and trainings and provides resources such as seeds, fertilizers and plants. As an experienced organisation in the field of agricultural and environmental education and consulting, AB seeks to expand its activities to better serve the needs of their target group. One of the new activities is to encourage agricultural entrepreneurship by improving the farmers’ marketing strategies.
GLEN participants can work in three different areas. Firstly in further developing and managing the mapping, monitoring and evaluation system. This task involves the organisation of existing data, map making and the collection and analysis of new pieces of information from the field in order to create a base that can be used for development and marketing purposes. Secondly, GLEN participants can undertake the re-organisation of the library and resource center system. This task requires an update of collected information, as well as keeping and filling records. Work in the resource centre involves also production and sub-editing of the AB’s newsletter and further development of and managing of online information tools (three interactive websites plus linkages) together with producing new materials promoting AB work such as videos or presentations. Thirdly GLEN participants can assist in the development of and management of a Special Purpose community project/s carried out by AB, for example a particular project called Moya we Khaya (Spirit of Home).
GLEN participants should have a driver licence, good communication and writing skills, experience in management and marketing or data collection and analysis as well as IT skills. Knowledge about agriculture, gardening and some agronomy are an asset. Own laptops are a great help, to reduce load on shared computers.
The scheduled project time is three months between July and October 2008.
The preparatory phase of the project will take place in English. The GLEN project team will be composed of one German/Swiss, one Slovak and one French participant. In order to strengthen the cooperation of Hamburg and Nordrhein-Westfalen with South Africa, German applications from Hamburg and Nordrhein-Westfalen are particularly welcome.
